This article presents the historical research, development and pplication of new labyrinth device type “U”, developed by Petrobras for the sealing of axes and rotating machinery bearing housings, such as electric motors and centrifugal pumps. The objective of this new device is to increase the degree of protection against ingress of water and dust in industrial electric motors and centrifuges pumps, increasing the reliability and life cycle of these important electric drives and machines for the oil industry. After several tests in independent laboratories and manufacturer of electric motors, this new device has been adopted for use in industrial electric motors for installation in explosive atmospheres containing flammable gases and combustible dusts. This good practice has been patented by Petrobras and licensed for use by major global sealing manufacturers, being incorporated in Petrobras Technical Standards N‑0553 and N-0906, on industrial centrifugal pumps, and N-2919 on industrial electric motors.
